Professional Baseball is one of the most well-known sports organizations in the United States.  Baseball has its humble beginning in 1903 to now where it is a vital part of our sports lives and has thrived providing fans young and old with joy and heartbreak following their favorite teams.  

One thing is to note is it takes a lot of work behind the scenes to make baseball work in our communities.  You don’t actually have to play baseball or be a player to be involved in baseball or any sports league which is great.  

The sports industry is growing and with the right skills students/players can capitalize on these opportunities by developing some skills early.  The business of sports is a $73.5 billion dollar industry and growing.  

In 2020 Deloitte published a 2021 outlook on the sports industry.  Which highlighted additional job roles that were not thought of as typical jobs in the industry such as, General Manager, President of Baseball Operations, and the like.  They pointed out key opportunities for growth in areas of data monetization.  Marketing jobs and roles will change because of this shift.  Fan engagement will be viewed differently via a data-driven platform.  

Another area that was touched on speaks on fan engagement and the growing opportunity to grow the game. The ever-growing areas of our digital world will ensure that there are more things to consider when looking at the game of baseball as a career option.  

Career opportunities are limited to individuals with great athletic prowess, there are many jobs for non-athletes as well. Here are a few roles to consider:

  1. General Managers – 
  • The role of a general manager (GM) is typically responsible for all activities in running a baseball team. The GM the person who hires and fires the coaching staff, including the field manager.   They also mange all aspects of the organization from stadium sponsorship, advertising, ticket sell and negotiating team and player salaries.
  • Education: A college degree may be required for most of these position.  However, playing the game and starting from the bottom may also be a way to become a general manager.  Having a background in finance, accounting, public relations, marketing and management will be used in this position.
